The Fence: More Than a Barrier

May 2025 Newsletter | Kenneth Bargers

Are you considering adding a fence? Do you need to replace your existing fence? The homeowner’s specific purpose for a fence can range from a complete boundary enclosure to the aesthetically pleasing curb appeal of a street view. Determining if a fence is an asset to compliment your property requires due diligence to avoid costly corrections after installation.

I hope the below key factors and videos are an informative tool for now and in the future.

Determine your purpose.

Is the fence to...

  • Control access?

  • Obstruct views from the neighbors or public?

  • Create a dog run, or an immediate enclosure for the pool, child’s play area, or entertaining?

  • Enhance the home’s curb appeal?

  • Create a side barrier of height and noise reduction?

  • Create a border or boundary per the property lines?

Allowable.

Research the zoning restrictions for setbacks of the property and if you are allowed to have a fence in the front yard. Further guidelines may dictate the installation including materials used, areas allowed and height if you live in a neighborhood association or historic area.

Always be a good neighbor.

As a courtesy, inform your neighbors that you are considering adding a fence. Make clear the boundaries and intention of where the fence will be placed. Occasionally, a neighbor may join in and use the same vendor to add to their own property.

Understand your investment.

Research the installation cost and maintenance of the fence. Costs vary widely depending on these factors including area and height. It is always a good suggestion to pursue three quotes from recommended vendors. Understand your warranties including the manufacturers and the installer’s coverage.

Doing some homework before receiving a quote can be beneficial when speaking to a fence vendor. Here are a couple of inch calculators to evaluate as rough guidelines. Always remember to enter the type of material used.

Understand your property lines.

One of the most important factors is understanding where your property lines are including any required setbacks. Do you have a survey to share with the fence vendors? A mistaken impression of your legal boundary can be financially devastating to your goal.

Mirror your home’s style.

It is very enticing to take advantage of today’s fencing options such as the very popular upward trend utilizing the mix of natural, organic, and man-made materials creating an appealing focal point to the property. Please remain focused on mirroring your home’s build and style including the neighborhood’s personality.
